Developmental Milestones

Congratulations --  you have a newborn baby! Learn what your baby can do at this age.

Babies develop at their own pace and each milestone shows a range of skills typically seen in children's development. Your baby may not meet every milestone listed here and still be progressing normally. Since each child is unique, your baby’s growth might be different from what's included here. Your baby might develop more quickly in some areas than in others. At the same time, if you have any concerns about your baby’s growth and development talk to your health care professional or call 1-866-693-GROW to talk to a professional and find out ways in which you can get connected to various resources in Minnesota.

Milestones

Cognitive Development – Means how children explore, think and figure things out.

Your baby might explore, figure things out and act in one or more of these ways:

Sees objects that are eight-to-twelve inches from his face.

Is sensitive to sounds around him.

Startles to loud noises by arching his back, kicking his legs and flailing his arms.

Parent Strategies

Supporting your baby’s exploration and learning.

Encourage your baby’s curiosity! Put your baby on a blanket on the floor and let him stretch out and kick his feet freely. You can show big, soft and safe toys to your baby. Toys that are bright and colorful will catch your baby’s attention. Take time to cuddle with your baby!
